The Lakota word for warrior is Akicita (pronounced ah-KEE' cha-tah). This term encompasses both men and women who boldly safeguarded their communities and families. The Akicita were unwavering guardians and protectors, engaging in crucial roles such as confronting enemies, hunting, policing, and scouting. In Lakota history, individuals were selected as Akicita due to their exceptional bravery, leadership, and generosity, and this prestigious position demanded a lifelong commitment.
